Topic: The NintendoLife VGM Tournament: Best Official Remixes (Round One)

Hello all,

Back in the day when I was active on the forums I ran a tournament where the community would vote on the best videogame music. It’s been a few years since I stopped so I’m not sure if there’s anyone still around that remembers, but with all the free time at my disposal I thought I’d try reviving the idea. If people are interested then we can decide on a theme and start nominating tracks. More so than deciding a definitive “best” song, I think this is just a fun way to appreciate and discover new music from games you may not have played.

As far as the format is concerned, once we decide on a theme (music from a particular series, boss themes, music from water levels/areas, etc.), each person will be allowed to nominate whatever songs they think fit the best. I will then enter them all in a randomized bracket and post polls so we can vote which songs move on to the next round until we have a winner. If you have any questions or ideas feel free to share!

Main Themes? Mario music? Animal Crossing music?

Those are all good ideas. I also thought of title/menu themes as an option.

I remember those threads during the heyday of NL. Based on how many people have looked and responded in this thread, I don't think VGM tournaments will do well nowadays.

@Link-Hero We may have to bring back other and new community events as a whole to reawaken the spark of tourneys like this one otherwise this may lead to quickened uninterest.

Let give this a try anyway.

@ThePirateCaptain I suggest to keep it simple like a preset songs tourney then rev it up for later tourneys so fan-chosen ones can be done for later.

I understand that, but the interest for a tournament on this site is not what it once was. I would love to be proved wrong.

@Link-Hero Why lock a thread just because it doesn’t appeal to some people? I think it should still exist, even if some people don’t want a competition.

I don't think enough users are using the forums to get a tournament going. These forums aren't popular like they used to be.

I'd be down to participate and I imagine when it launches proper it'll catch on again. Just need to do something that most people will be interested in, so what would be an exceptionally cool category?

Yes, exactly! We can still do this, it just won’t be as huge as it used to be!

As for categories, I think Title Themes would be a good way to start and then add on from there. What do you think, @ThePirateCaptain? Will we do it?

Sorry guys, I’m still getting used to checking the forums regularly again. There’s a few people interested so I think we can give it a shot and see how things go. If everyone is onboard with Title Themes as a category then we can go ahead and open nominations. The goal is to get to 32 songs total so 3-4 songs per person should be a good start and we can adjust as needed.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme
Mii Channel theme (If it counts)
Super Mario Bros. the original theme
Super Smash Bros. Brawl theme
If I get a fifth, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate theme

Now we just need users like @Captain_Toad, @SomeBitTripFan, @kkslider5552000, @Dogorilla and @Link-Hero to post their nominations to get this thread going!

For title themes I have:
Megaman 3
Ocarina of Time
Halo: Combat Evolved
Skyrim

As an idea, you should post a Youtube playlist of all the nominations when we have them all so people can listen to them easily.
