The Splatoon series has always had a central Idol group for each game — Callie and Marie made up Splatoon's Squid Sisters, and Pearl and Marina made up Off the Hook for Splatoon 2. For Splatoon 3, we have Deep Cut, featuring Shiver, Frye, and Big Man — and now we know just how the music of this terrific trio is created.
It might surprise inklings and octolings to know, though, that there are actual humans behind this triple threat. But, in a video shared by Nintendo of America, the secret is out. And honestly, we want in on these recordings — they look fun! Shiver is voiced by Anna Sato and Frye by Laura Yokozawa
Two of Deep Cut's hits are shown in this 'In the Studio' video — "Anarchy Rainbow" and "Fins in the Air". But Deep Cut isn't the only group featured here. Damp Socks, a rock band with an "upbeat melancholy style" featuring Off the Hook also makes an appearance with "Tentacle to the Metal".
The music of this series is catchy and iconic, and a fun little peek behind the curtain is always a nice surprise. Plus, this video was shared the same day that Deep Cut's 'Nintendo Live 2022' concert, alongside DJ K.K. Paradise Mixx!!, has now been updated and shared with English subtitles. You can check that out below:
Are you a fan of Deep Cut and Splatoon 3's music? Shocked to see the faces behind the trio (or, at least, two of them)? Let us know.

Justice for Big Man!
I love Deep Cuts songs! Out of all the idol groups their my favorite!
The music was always interesting to me in splatoon games, for one i seemed to think they were computer generated, cool to see there's actual voices behind the songs
I LOVE THEM❤️🦑❤️🦑…so talented…they add so much to the game with their music. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
Good songs, but I don't like them in battle 😅
But who is Big Man voiced by?!
I’ve noticed since I got the first dlc that in the lobby some older tracks from previous games will play there. I wish we’d get them in battle. We definitely need some new battle tracks.
I wonder if they have the "lyrics" in front of them when recording
I adore learning about who voices Splatoon characters since they always have such reverence for the characters they bring to life and Anna and Laura are no exception; they absolutely nailed it and I can't wait to hear more from them in the future!
@Nicolai @GreenTea I assume Big Man wasn't mentioned here since he appears to be voiced by an already existing VA for Splatoon in Yuki Tsuji, known mainly for providing the voice for Male Octolings in-game!
@Fizza Ohhh, that makes sense then. I still wish we saw him, but I had no clue it was the same guy who did the male octolings! Splatoon is wild
@Yannis they are a little computer generated but its a filter over their voice to make it sound more like how a squid would talk, other than that they are actually saying all the gibberish. Youtuber Scruffy does a great job at figuring out how they did it, heres his vid on it if your interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVA48I2n-qQ
Old man yelling at cloud here: "Nintendo make your freaking music available for freak sake."
@TheNumbr24 so that's how this works haha, that's so cool, thanks for sharing this
@mousness I know right??? Basically every other video game publisher puts their music up on streaming services but Nintendo doesn't. Sega truly does what nintendont in this case.
Its amazing how talented studio musicians are while it's sad they get so little attention. Video game music is art inside the art, so maybe some people see it as something that "is just there", unfortunately.
I'd like them to make available everything they shot in studio, so we could see it in the making, including orchestrated songs
I'm so deep in the ink at this point that I actually know the names of all the different made up bands, and would spend my actual hard earned money to watch a hologram performance live.
@Yannis no problem, scruffy is a great youtuber overall if your interested in how the smaller details of games works. he mainly focuses on sound design but all of his videos are a great watch.
FINALLY! Nintendo shares studio footage of Deep Cut! I love seeing the real life girls sing the Splatoon songs for some reason.
AHHH Frye breaks the fourth wall at 1:11! I don't think that's allowed!😠😠(😁)
@GreenTea @Nicolai I think we've seen Big Man elsewhere, and his design might be inspired by the drummer we've see at the Splatoon 3 concert, and how the drummer opens his mouth wide while drumming. Or maybe everyone knows that already?🤣 Pasting the link to play at a relevant time stamp https://youtu.be/owojB5CngY0?t=2007
Is this confirmation that they're actually speaking Japanese then?
It's nice to finally learn about Deep Cut's voice actors. Too bad Big Man's isn't made clear.
So cool seeing the Splatoon characters VAs sing, I always love when Nintendo release behind the scenes videos like this one on their channel!
