If you've been wondering what's next for the Dragon Ball fighting series now that FighterZ is winding down - here it is! At the recent 'Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2023' event, Bandai Namco teased a new Dragon Ball Budokai Tenkaichi game.
In the trailer, you can see Goku is in his Super Saiyan Blue form, which means there could be a lot of content in there related to the Dragon Ball Super series. After the teaser was shown, a bit more information was provided by the host - revealing this new title was still in the "early stages of development". No platforms have been announced at this point in time.
"Wow, a whole new game! Dragon Ball games have been more popular than ever right now and you guys already know this... Budokai Tenkaichi... there hasn't been a new installment for 10 years, but the series is set to return... So the game is still in the early stages of development, but the team made this video especially for you guys at Battle Hour. So I know there's a lot of excitement in this room right now, but stay tuned for more information."
You can watch the full reveal play out at the 4:41:00 mark (including the crowd reactions) in the video below:
The Budokai Tenkaichi games started out life in 2005 on the PlayStation with Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi. It was followed by Budokai Tenkaichi 2 in 2006 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 in 2007, which were both released on the Nintendo Wii.

Not an anime or dragon ball guy myself, but I know people have been waiting an absurd amount of time for this series to return. It’s been a long time coming, have fun Dragon Ball Fans!
@TheBigBlue Personally I haven't. By time 3 came around the series was starting to enter the realm of boredom. That, and the various takes on the formula with spin-off games wasn't not very good.
I'll be skipping it because I'm pretty much done reliving the Z saga for the 10000th time. That and I'm not a fan of Super so I don't wanna relive that either.
One day maybe if there is a game that doesn't follow the same story and instead something entirely new I'd be up for it. Heck, I'd actually play a game set in an entirely new timeline with new main characters.
Wake up and Hype news
No developer announced, no platform announced. Please god… don’t let it be a mobile gotcha game… please…
Knew about it last night. YESSSS!! I played the hell out of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and still do. This is god's send.
Namco when lasted about their DLC plans: “And this... is to go... EVEN. FURTHER. BEYOND!”
Best DB games series for me. Have been waiting an eternity for this one to come back. I am only afraid of one thing... Am I going to break my Dualsenses or My Joy cons playing this? Hope it supports my old unbreakable GameCube controllers
I haven’t even played the first 3, it I want to! So this news was so cool to wake up too! Forget Xenoverse 3, this is way more hype! It would be so cool if the retold everything up to the TOP arc, but that’s way to much, but still, imaging how cool that would be! I’m so hyped and happy for this!
I always wondered why this wasn't continued. It was pretty fun. Couldn't get into Xenoverse or Fighterz though. Not a dbz fan but I know someone who will be glad to see this return.
I betcha they purposely announced this so to take the hype and attention away from the more interesting fan made mod of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 for Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 for PlayStation 2 (not Wii).
Man, that really takes me back. I was never into the more competitive fighting games, but I put a ton of time into DBZ and Naruto games on the GameCube and Wii. Not to say I ever really stopped, but going from the traditional small arenas with more restricted movement to flying around massive battlefields felt like a big deal back then.
Pretty cool. It will be interesting to see what the gameplay is like considering all the ways Dragon Ball games have advanced over the years.
I hope it will have a large amount of playable characters again. That was one of the most appealing things about the previous ones.
Of all the pre-FighterZ fighting games within Dragon Ball games the Budokai Tenkaichi series is the one I remember the best.
I can only hope the new installment is good, especially after the success of FighterZ which I'm sure it will be (unfavourably) compared to, unfortunately, by a lot of people.
So will it be released on Switch ?
used to play tenkaichi 3 on the ps2 with my brother all the time, the hype is real!
@PateloDim from what i've seen, they haven't announced which platforms it will be released on just yet. But i'm sure it will find it's way on the switch, cause most dbz games have already been ported.
This could be a great opportunity to release Tenkaichi 3 on Switch to build up the hype
You know what, I would LOVE another Supersonic Warriors game. SSW2 on the DS is probably my go-to fighting game, so much nostalgia for that game (and glad I finally 100%'d it during lockdown).
This could be exciting. I’m not as nostalgic for the series as everyone else, given that I always felt the gameplay was a bit wonky. However, as a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, most of the games are desperately wonky. If this title learns from FighterZ to deliver something that feels modern with tight gameplay and blend it with the “there’s 7 billion characters in this game, farmer with a shotgun is there, everyone is there” aesthetic, this would be a lot of fun.
@Yannis Thanks my friend !!!
FGC people got their Dragon Ball game with FighterZ so don't take the fun out of Tenkaichi to please them no removing giant characters like Great Apes or Hirudigan because "REEEEEE BALANCE, ONLINE AND JUNK!!" this should be Tenkaichi please don't revive the series and take out all the stuff that made it what it was so it can please eSports people.
Love to see Budokai Tenkaichi back, had a lot of fun playing 2 and 3 on Wii!
Like others I hope it will have a large roster like the previous games, other than for it to be good and to come to Switch or its successor of course.
I am really excited for this one, but It better have Super Android 13 and Orange Piccolo.
@KingOhger Yes! Supersonic Warriors 1 and 2 are hidden gems I both love and still own both.
Played a lot 3 on Wii with my friends, and already have ZFigthers on switch. Unless they really make a must have game, I think I'll pass.
@KingOhger @Jokerwolf Unfortunately don't have Supersonic Warriors 1, only have played it on emulator, but I do have 2 and loved both so yes to a new one (and wouldn't mind a port of at least the first one on Switch or its successor in one way or the other)!
Budokai Tenkaichi 2 was THE Dragonball game for me. It had EVERYTHING I could want and more as a child. Easily one of the best games of all time too, in my opinion. So for me, this was an insane announcement. And I just hope they bring everything that was in the games back and just add more to it. More characters, stages, modes, and whatever else they can throw in there. If they can manage not to cut anything out and just have the visuals be good, then the games will honestly be absolutely perfect.
I also really hope there will be a version on Switch. But I'm not gonna hold my breath on release.
@JohnnyMind honestly they could just add a little bit more content into a remake of the second game and add modern graphics.
