The latest Japanese charts are now in from Famitsu, and while a number of Nintendo heavyweights continue to hold onto the top spots, this week sees an impressive Switch opening for Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (thanks, Gematsu). Debuting this week, the remaster of the 2008 Japanese exclusive sold a respectable 10,712 copies, beating the PS4 release which shifted a comparative 9,031.
This was not enough to challenge any of the highest-selling games this week, however, all of which are the usual suspects from Nintendo. Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe takes the top spot for the third week in a row, selling 32,132 copies (around half of last week's total), while Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Splatoon 3 continue to show their longevity as the titles sold 20,889 and 15,861 copies respectively.
the 2D exploration-adventure, Ib, also made its Japanese debut this week, filling a gap in the charts with a nice 9,080 sales. As for last week's surprise appearance from Metroid Prime Remastered, it's nowhere to be seen in the top ten this time around.
Here's your look at this week's Japanese software top ten:
- [NSW] Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe (Nintendo, 02/24/23) – 32,132 (283,744)

Onto the hardware charts, and this week once again sees Sony's PS5 come out on top with 51,510 sales, compared to the Switch OLED in second with 37,373.
The remaining members of the Switch family land in fourth and fifth positions respectively, as Microsoft's Xbox Series X makes an unusual leap into the thousands of weekly sales.
- PlayStation 5 – 51,510 (2,689,527)
- Switch OLED Model – 37,373 (4,035,179)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 13,359 (432,454)

Looks like good numbers all around.
Truly one of the weeks of all time.
Love to see the usual suspects and Switch games in general do well, but even more so Fatal Frame since it needs it much more (nice that Ib isn't doing bad, either)!
I'm surprise Fatal Frame IV sell so well in Japan considering it's just an HD remastered port of the same game they (not us) got on the Wii back then.
Yess, this is a good news. Nintendo Switch version sold 10.712. Playstation 4 version sold 9.031. This game never sells well. I know this way but hm sometimes it is possible. It is a good serie. It deserves more.
If they discontinued the OG Switch, would OLED get a bump do you think?
OLED model now crosses 4 million.
Nice to see Kirby leering down at his competitors with his toothless grin from on high. May your reign be long you frequently spherical, pink glutton!
Huh, didn’t know Fatal Frame was that popular in Japan. Cool.
Ironically, if I wanted Fatal Frame (I still want to call it Project Zero...) physically, I had to import a Japanese copy again. It has solved the issue of NOT being available otherwise in Europe, but maintained the problem where fans and collectors of the entire world all will more likely only add to Japanese sales, making it seem less popular here. Just like the re-release of the previous (or later, depending on how you see it) game in the series. Which DID get a beautiful special edition... On Wii U in Europe. I have it and I'm glad we got it in Europe, but saleswise it's not going to show that there is anaudience for these games here... I love my Wii U, but I know very few people who even had one, let alone bought Project Zero 5.
@lemonjellydude Did you forget about the digital PS5? Seems every week someone does. But damn, Nintendo aren't lying when they say the Switch is still selling strong.
@lemonjellydude wrong check the numbers again count the digital ps5 sales as well
I think it's funny when people, in particular YouTubers, like to act like it's a huge surprise when the PS5 now outsells the Switch.
Let's see... one console is now six years old. The other 2.5 years old.
One had stocking issues for the first year and a half or so of availability. The other one has been quite a bit easier to find.
One already has a user base of 120 million users. The other is around 30 million and climbing.
PlayStation is a strong brand and their consoles always sell well. It shouldn't surprise people that it's going to sell well, in particular against an aging console that is now over 6 years old.
By the same token, the fact that the Switch still sells as well as it does after six years is truly remarkable.
@lemonjellydude how did you look at the hardware charts1-5...and ignore #3 entirely?
@GrailUK I do wonder if they will drop the OG this year and just push the OLED if parts permit. At the same time they could drop the price of the OLED to the OG. I think that would cause a spike in numbers.
@Duncanballs They could but I don't have the maths (or the projections) for how many more units they would have to sell to justify it. I'm not paid to put that much thought into it We have no idea if the components are any cheaper (and would imagine they wouldn't be.)
@GrailUK Me neither but I think we will see some change in Switch approach now that it is approaching it's twilight years. I don't think sales will drop off as quick as Wii though. When Nintendo says the Switch has XXX years left in it, we don't know how much of that is overlap with its successor.
Very glad to see Fatal Frame/Project Zero selling well. Hopefully they continue to bring out more games.
The Switch itself seems to be a beast. Just keeps selling. Nintendo really hit the jackpot with this system.
@Duncanballs Yeah, true. I think the film and Zelda would be enough for a second wind (despite it hardly runningout of breath) so I'm still very sceptical for this year (even though their holiday season is pretty much still unknown.) But yeah, uncharted terrortory for sure. How do you move away from something that's on track to becoming the best selling console ever? Software sales are magnificent. Look at PS2 -> PS3. It was a mess. And any transistion period doesn't usually feature an older model selling 50K units a week lol. Bonkers and I'm glad I'm not the CEO lol. Granted, it's a good head ache to have
@GrailUK I just hope Nintendo make a move soon. The Switch has had the best third party support since the days of SNES. The ports from PS4 era etc are admirable and some have surprised me somewhat. Soon development will move to PS5 and Xbox series only except for the likes of FIFA, just dance etc that support previous gens to the bitter end. The Switch isn't going to be able to handle these titles soon and we will go back to gimped ports and half made efforts. Nintendo needs to catch up to a point hardware wise so we don't see a drought in third party games.
I wonder if Bayonetta Origins will take top spot next week?
Splatoon 3 almost at 4M in Japan alone, nice.
@Duncanballs A very valid point They say themselves that software sells consoles.
Never played a Fatal Frame game before but just started FF2 the other day. Upscaled 4x it looks better than half of the Switch libraries games lol.
Don't know if these go in chronological order or what, but figured that was a good of place to start as any.
@theModestMouse FF2 is the fan favorite of the series. You can definitely start with that one. There is a connection between the first and the second but it’s minor. The games stand strong on their own. I would suggest both 1&2 before playing 3. 4 can be played at anytime. 5 has a connection with 1 but probably could be played as a stand-alone as well.
@Serpenterror Sadly, 20,000 units is abysmal over here.
Schools will be finishing at the end of the month, so people are withholding pennies til then, hence low numbers all round.
