Life, Lately: Sneaky Sephora Purchases & Getting Back Into Drawing

kiehls calendula and ale soothing hydrating masque

It’s been a while since the last Life, Lately so I thought I’d pop in, even though nothing interesting has been going on.

I wrote my Sephora VIB Sale haul post a little too soon, since I ended up getting a few other things. Not many, though – and all of them have a place in my collection.

The Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm is an old favorite of mine. I haven’t used it in years though, but I decided to repurchase it since it’s just such a good cleansing balm. I was using straight up olive oil to take my eye makeup off in the meantime but it gets real messy, real fast. Plus it doesn’t wash off like cleansing balms do!

I was planning on getting the Kiehls Calendula and Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque directly from the Kiehls website when they had their $20 off $65 sale. I didn’t actually need anything else though, so I just ended up getting it at Sephora instead. I *almost* convinced myself I needed a new moisturizer, but I successfully dodged the bullet!

Instead of repurchasing my favorite Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, I wanted to try out their Soft Matte Complete Concealer (whoops, forgot to include it in the photo) this time around. The Radiant Creamy Concealer is one of my favorite holy grail products – I’ve repurchased it at least six times, if not more! The only downside is that you can never get the last bit of product out, so it goes to waste. Since the Soft Matte Complete Concealer comes in a pot, I know I’ll easily be able to use every last bit of it. And if you’re wondering, I’m Custard in both formulas!

I’ve started to get back into drawing, too! Pardon all the watermarks but getting shit stolen/uncredited is The Worst. I got a new sketchbook (the Pentalic Traveler Pocket Journal Sketch) and I like it a lot. It has a soft cover and the pages are nice and weighty. I was never really a fan of the spiral bound ones – not sure why, to be honest. I decorated the cover with a sticker from one of my favorite artists, fourfires!

Right now my art isn’t anything really… significant so far, but hey, that’s what comes with learning right? I’m putting an emphasis on working on faces and hands. Bodies are coming quite naturally to me since I lift and I like noticing muscles on other people. I have an idea of what generally goes where, so I’m drawing a lot on poses! I’m taking a lot of inspiration from Batgirl and Wonder Woman right now since they have alllll the muscles *o*

Faces are always something that I have to take more effort in. It’s really easy to draw the same face with different hair and clothes, so I’m working on distinguishing features. It helps a lot to draw from reference (can you tell I’m an avid heyclaire fan?), even though I’m not really where I’d like to be yet. Also, girls are just pretty to draw.

This sounds so stupid, but I have a personal Instagram account (it’s over @entarotassadar!) and I decided to stop using hashtags on it. It’s a little weird – with my main account as something I want to grow, sometimes it gets stressful just thinking about having to put hashtags on for it to do well. I was doing that with my personal account as well, to the point where it’d be heavily curated. I don’t want to do that! I just want to post whenever I want to post without worrying about it doing well. So far, it’s been a really nice change of pace.

How have you been lately?

  • I can see you’re both a great artist with pencil as you are with liner, it’s gorgeous! Personally, I’m a shit artist (can’t draw a face or body to save my life) so I admire everyone’s skill.

How is the Soft Matte Concealer? I just purchased my second Radiant Creamy Concealer (gonna go for a third soon) but I want to try one in the pot. I’m just worried it might crease up, since I mainly use Radiant Creamy Concealer on it’s own.

    • hehe, thank you! if anything i feel like the radiant creamy one creases more on me than the soft matte one does – i’ve only used the soft matte twice though, if that means anything to you :p i’ve used it as a eyeshadow primer and it works great (something i never do with the radiant creamy bc i feel like it’s *too* creamy and settles into my eyelid folds). i hope you can get a sample of the soft matte concealer!!

  • Your art isn’t anything? Damn, you should see mine…I still draw stick figures and no, I’m not even joking. LOL! I am tempted to get Nars Creamy Radiant concealer but I can’t bring myself to buy high end concealer! The pot version seems to be very popular but I am paranoid it will crease on me.

    Shireen⎜Reflection of Sanity

    • hahaha, i guess what i mean to say is it’s not where i’d like it to be! are you able to get a sample of either one? if anything i feel like the pot version creases less on me because it’s less emollient, and i also feel like i’m using less compared to the radiant creamy concealer.

  • I don’t know why the Clinique cleansing balm doesn’t work for me, I think I’m allergic to an ingredient in there. It always dries out my skin and makes me super itchy. The NARS soft matte concealer is one of my favorites, I don’t know why I didn’t repurchase. Your sketches are beautiful!

    Perfect Shade of Mauve

    • aw, i’m sorry to hear that! have you found any cleaning balms/oils that work for you? hey, there’s still that $20ish off $50 sale that should be coming up soon to restock 😀 thank you hehe, I’m practicing every day to hopefully get better!

  • Ooo your drawings are beautiful, Becky!! I’ve never been the best a drawing, but I love seeing when others make beautiful art!!
I need to try that Clinique cleansing balm, I’ve heard good things from many people!
I also feel the same about my personal Instagram. I’ve been more focused on the one for my Etsy Store, but when I do post on my personal one, I don’t use many or focus much on hashtags. It’s kind of nice not to!

    • aw, thank you! a lot of it is consistent practice i think, i used to draw a lot as a kid and stopped for a long time. when i picked it up again i was pretty shit but i kept following yt tutorials and copying from my favorite comics to start!

it’s so funny with instagram – it’s not so instant anymore! one of my good friends took and uploaded a picture within a minute and i was shocked – i didn’t remember the last time i did that! and that’s what kind of sparked the no-hashtag personal ‘gram, hehe.

  • i love your drawing! omg you’re good with makeup and good with art too. why you so artistic you’re putting me to shame :)) no but seriously.

nars radiant creamy concealer in custard has got to be one of those cult favorites from the youtube beauty community lol i’ve never tried it but if it’s really the original to maybelline fit me concealer (which is considered a dupe by many) then i guess i believe it’s a HG concealer (because the fit me one is one of my faves!) i’m curious about the soft matte concealer though. i heard that it’s perfect for that no makeup makeup days and that it looks so natural and not too intensely full coverage? the first pot concealer i have ever tried was from nyx and although it’s good imo, it has its off days (for some unknown reason. probably because sometimes i forgot to moisturize my under eyes with an eye cream and instead went straight with an all-face moisturizer)

    • thank you!! ;-; hahaha in all honesty though i feel more of a jack of all trades than specializing in any one of them, but it means a lot!!!

i used to use the fit me concealer! i didn’t like the applicator, lol – plus i’m so clumsy, so i’d always drop it and then the cover would break :’D is there a difference in eye creams and regular moisturizers? i always thought they kinda did the same thing for me hahaha, unless it’s one of those eye creams that targets something specifically. the soft matte concealer i think has a *little* more coverage than the radiant creamy, but you can’t really tell unless up close i think. i made a lil video comparing the two (let’s hope it’s good (and also hopefully less than 5 mins long) when i get around to editing it hahaha)

  • Emily

I’m glad it’s not just me who struggles with the Nars Creamy concealer! Like you, I adore it but I can see so much is left yet I can’t get to it gah! Will definitely have to check out the complete concealer although it would feel strange it being in a pot!

You need to keep up with the drawing! You’ve got some serious talent!

    Musings & More

    • hahaha, i literally have 3 empty tubes of it but i’m not willing to let it go because there’s still some product inside that i can get out with enough elbow grease… thanks for the kind words, it means a lot!

  • Wow, your have such a great talent to draw, I love it, love your post too, thank you for sharing!!!

  • Beautiful drawings! Especially the hands and face shapes are good, I’m often having some trouble with both. I’ll check out that sketchbook you linked as I’m a “little” addicted to sketchbook. At this moment I’m quite loyal to Moleskine, but I do like to try new papers. I’m sure you like the NARS concealer, I use them both under my eyes.

    • haha, i was definitely a “little” addicted to sketchbooks back then too! i’m much better now though, i only have this one and a few smaller moleskine ones. i don’t think i’m that big a fan of moleskine though, the pages for the one i currently have are very thin and it’s almost impossible to do pen drawings without it showing up on the other side. i think that’s why i like thick and weighty pages haha!

  • I love your drawings! I used to draw a lot back in middle school/high school, and bodies and hands were always something I struggled with, and I even considered getting one of those wooden mannequins to help! I also picked up the Kiehl’s calendula + aloe mask during the Black Friday sale and I’m curious to see how well it’ll work. Have you tried yours yet?

    Jenny | Geeky Posh

    • same here! i have a wooden mannequin but tbh it doesn’t help me all that much LOL but who knows, maybe it’ll come in handy when i get better since a lot of professional artists still use it!

personally i really like it! it smells like a sweet herbal tea and i’m alllll about that lol. it says to leave it on for five minutes but i always tend to forget and leave it on for 15+, and i thinkkkkk i almost feel like i’m about to break out when i leave it on too long? i don’t though (whew!) but i think it might be best to leave it on for shorter than longer for my skin. it’s not as hydrating as the glossier moon mask if you’ve tried it, but it feels like it hydrdates on a serum level if that makes sense.

  • No need to say your apologies about watermarks. It sucks when people take credit for your work. On a different note, those sketches are really good!

    • it’s not so much about taking credit, it’s more about not *giving* credit unfortunately. a surprising amount of people think it’s okay to put “source unknown” or “found on pinterest” as a credit and it’s not! so it’s easier to put fugly watermarks on everything to protect myself, hahaha.

      thank you! <3

  • A lovely post and very nice that you have re-discovered your love for drawing. I did Fashion Illustration at university as a part of my degree all those many years ago, I should start drawing again 🙂

    Laura xo

    • ah, that sounds fun! definitely do, it’s another creative outlet for me 🙂 you can never have too many, haha!

  • Sam

I love your drawings! I have a friend who draws as well, and she also has a difficult time with faces. I think a lot of her work is also more things, than people anyway. I’d be curious to see how you get on with the soft matte concealer too! I was debating between the creamy or the matte, and I’ve noticed a lot more people seem to like the matte version. It’ll be a while before I get another concealer, but I’m just curious!

  • You are such a talented artist! I hope you get back into drawing more – I’d love to see more of your drawings on the blog 🙂
