5 Beauty Minis on Trial

I’m kind of the worst at writing these little beginning paragraphs – I can smash the entire body out in a sitting, but the first paragraph? Days. Sometimes I feel like writing something half-assed for this paragraph, and today is one of those days. Now that you’re all aware of that, here are some of the little minis I’ve been trying out recently.

If you don’t know already, I always shit on Bioderma. I’ve used Bioderma in the past, but then I discovered the Garnier Micellar water and never looked back. They both worked the same for me, except the Garnier one isn’t as expensive or as drying. I had this little bottle of Bioderma laying around that’s been untouched for a while, so I thought I’d use it up anyway. (Roughly translates to: I ran out of the Garnier micellar water and was too lazy to go out to buy a new one. Then I discovered this sitting in one of my drawers by chance.) Now that I’m using it again, I noticed it does a slightly better job at removing my makeup – including waterproof mascara! I still need to take the last stubborn bits off with oil, though.

Everyone and their mothers are saying great things about the Sunday Riley UFO Oil, so I wanted to give it a try, too. It’s a treatment catered towards people with acne-prone skin, and ya girl doesn’t have acne-prone skin. I just wanted to jump on the bandwagon, okay?! I’m secretly hoping that it’ll help with the discoloration around my nose and mouth though. Something tells me I should pass this off to my sister, since she’s exactly the target audience. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not a big fan of the scent, but it comes from the actual ingredients themselves since the list of ingredients don’t include fragrance. Unless one of the ingredients is used as fragrance…

If real rose petals infused in the Fresh Rose Face Mask doesn’t scream luxury, I don’t know what does. It’s more of a gel formula so it doesn’t dry down, and it smells like a rose jam. As luxurious as it sounds though, I’m not sure if this actually does anything for my skin. If I was made of money, I’d purchase this just because it makes me feel good (anyone else feel that way about skincare sometimes?). It’s a gentle mask though, and you don’t need much either – I’m wondering if I’ll get better results from using this daily or every other day.

Oooh boy, where do I even begin with the Urban Decay Highlighting Fluid in Sin?! I put a pretty hefty amount on just-moisturized skin in the usual places you’d put highlighter. With a little help from my fingers to blend, it leaves such a dewy glow! I don’t use foundation, and I prefer how it looks under makeup versus on top – for some reason the latter looks a lot patchier.

I’ve been seeing the Dr. Jart Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream just about everywhere! It’s a lot thicker than I expected it to be, and I actually needed a little bit of facial spray to make it into a more workable viscosity. The scent reminds me a little bit of tiger balm, though it’s not as pungent. I don’t think it’s something I’d purchase on my own just because it’s so darn thick, and doesn’t provide enough hydration for my skin on its own.

  • The rose face mask sounds (and probably smells) really good! i recently started using this blueberry facial scrub from Trader Joe’s and it is like literally rubbing fresh blueberries all over my face, lol

    • it does – just like a rose jam, though not too sweet! i could almost lick it off if it didn’t taste bitter, haha. the blueberry scrub sounds good – i find that usually a lot of blueberry products smell super artificial and makes me want to gag, but the thought of rubbing fresh blueberries all over my skin feels like bliss!

  • Ok I’m with ya girl on UFO – but I bought it for my bf since is skin is a bit more acne prone / oily. I used it a few time when I was at his house and idk why but my skin LOVED it. Like my skin looked gooood. I’m trying to finish up my Luna oil but I think I may start using his UFO oil since we live together now and I have easy access to it haha.

Also I was not big on bioderma when I first tried it – I remember everyone saying/thinking it was the shiz, but with all the waterproof eye makeup I wear it just was not cutting it for me. I am testing out the Thayer’s rose petal witch hazel and I really like that!!

I really do need to use more of my minis up and I think some of the ones I’m gonna test are the Drunk Elephant jelly cleanser + Tatcha minis I got from their gift set earlier this year (lol).

    • PLS TELL ME HOW TO MAKE YOUR BOYFRIEND TAKE SKINCARE SERIOUSLY. mine ran out of moisturizer for 2 or 3 weeks and he just…. did not care. his skin was flaking off and he just lived with it, lol. hmmmm, maybe i’ll give the ufo oil a few more tries before passing it on – i so desperately want it to do wonders for my skin but like, my skin isn’t very problematic to begin with LOL

does thayers work as micellar water too? i was under the impression that it was just a toner! i watched your skincare collection on ig stories and even though i consider my skincare to be more on the curated side, i kinda have a weakness for it and I JUST WANT EVERYTHING. ALL THE MASKS, ESPECIALLY.

  • Emily

I love minis not only for travel but for when the full-sized products are expensive! I’m definitely of the same opinion when it comes to garnier micellar water, I just can’t justify the price for bioderma!

    Musings & More

    • some people have said the garnier micellar water makes their skin sting ;-; i can justify the price of mini makeup since it takes almost forever to finish, but not so much skincare since it’s something i use everyday, sometimes twice a day.

  • I feel ya on the opening paragraphs. It’s so hard because it feels like I need a grand sentence, anecdote and BAM. But nothing… I’m currently writing job applications and the first sentence is ALWAYS a struggle.

I have the mini Bioderma but only have used it once?? twice?? Nothing super fantastic for me either, especially for the price but can’t complain. I keep seeing so many Sunday Riley reviews but they’re SO subjective to your skin and it’s kinda hard to splurge when they’re so pricey!!! Idk. I have A LOT of scarring/hyperpigmentation issue lately so have been struggling to find something that actually works…

I have the mini Fresh mask too! It just smells really nice, not gonna lie. I think my skin wasn’t amazing afterwards but I do love bringing it for short trips! It’s super handy and makes everything feel so luxe~ lol.

    • glad i’m not the only one! job applications are always so stressful – even one cover letter can take me a solid few hours to write. good luck on those!!

it seems like sunday riley is catered more towards people with problematic skin, which i definitely don’t have (thanks mom!!). i tried a sample of the luna oil and had high hopes because claire marshall liked it a lot for her skin texture + discoloration + scarring and it was just kinda meh to me because….. i have none of those problems lol

i did feel my skin becoming softer + smoother from that fresh mask after using it every day or every other day, and now it’s all used up :p i’m debating between the kiehls aloe and calendula mask or getting the full size of the fresh mask… they seem to do similar things but the kiehls one is about $20 less expensive but on the flipside, i haven’t tried it out before either.

  • I hope you end up liking the Bioderma one! I know what you’re talking about – when Bioderma wasn’t readily available in Canada, I used to pay the crazy markups just to get my hands on it! That rose mask… I always have mixed feelings towards Fresh’s beauty products. They sting my skin so badly (and here I thought rose is supposed to be a calming ingredient!)

    • sometimes i forget how lucky we americans are to get (almost) first dibs on everything + good shipping too! i hope it’ll change soon for canada, my canadian bf was saying that shipping and things have gotten better from the past 5 or so years, but he doesn’t think it’ll get on par to american standards anytime soon.

aw, i actually really love the fresh rose line, even though it’s a bit pricier than other brands. their soy cleanser on the other hand… WHY IS IT INCLUDED IN ALL THEIR SETS, i dislike it so much ._.

  • Sam

seriously, I always want to buy things for (usually) acne-prone skin because everybody loves it, but I’m not acne-prone either so I just look at it wistfully on sephora and also lowkey love the fact that I don’t have to fork out as much money than if I was acne-prone.

& YES, I know, I see the cicapair cream too, but it’s so pricey D; if I did splurge on a dr. jart product though it would be the color correcting version though, because it seems perfect for my redness, and since I’m trying to wean foundation out of my routine, I could just use that as my base instead.

    sam / My Beauty Cloud

    • HAHAHA yeah, same here! I’m like, I want to jump on the bandwagon because people are saying it’s done so much for their skin, but at the same time i don’t have problematic skin! I just tried a sample pack of their color correcting cream actually, and i hated it!! it’s built in with sunscreen and feels like a waterproof sunscreen on my face, and it also left my face 2 shades lighter and made my skin look like shit underneath. maybe it was just a bad sample though? i’ve heard a lot of people love it, so def get a sample if you can first!

      • Sam

oof, that’s such a shame! yeah, definitely convinced me to ask for a sample!

  • dude, the garnier miscellar water is bomb. i love it. i’m just upset it’s hard to find the big size bottle in here. i love the pink one though, not the blue. i think the formulation differs from the UK / US version because the blue one in here says pureactive and for oily/combo skin BUT IT BROKE ME OUT UGH so yeah, the pink one is best. the blue one is garbage LOL
i also tried the maybelline miscellar water and surprisingly it works great for sensitive skin. doesn’t break me out too and it’s also affordable 😉

i’m currently trying out a sample size of innisfree jeju pore cleansing foam and their green tea seed serum. so far so good, especially the serum since i’ve never used serum or essences before (i always stick with the basic cleanse, tone, moisturize theory)

    • i think the blue one here is for waterproof makeup! i just bought the blue one on amazon and hopefully it’s the one for waterproof LOL i just kind of assumed it was??? some people have said that the garnier one stings their faces though ;-;

i have dry skin so i can definitely feel if i don’t put serum on, though honestly i have no idea if it actually does anything for my skin in the long term.

      • yeah, the blue stings my nose area! i forgot to mention that it stung the redness around my nose which sucks and odd because it contains no perfume and is dermatologically tested. also, are you referring to this one because the one we have over here at indonesia is this one. not sure if formulation differs.

        • i’ve heard it doesn’t really matter if it’s dermatologically tested bc they can just have one dermatologist test it and have them say yeah, it’s great! or like… literally just have them test it and it doesn’t matter what the results are lol. mine is different! it doesn’t have the pureactive label but it has the skinactive on top. i wonder if it varies by country?!

  • I’m a fan of the Bioderma though to be fair, I haven’t tried the Garnier so I can’t compare. One of these days I’ll get around to it! Also, I totally get what you mean by buying products just because they make me feel good, which I’m definitely guilty of doing…more than I’d like to admit, which is why Fresh’ toner with rose petals is on my wishlist!

    Jenny | Geeky Posh

    • that toner is actually SO GOOD! i’ve been using it for the past couple of days and i do notice a difference in that it lightly hydrates my skin – not enough for it to actually be a moisturizer, but good enough that my face doesn’t feel like it’s shrinking because it’s so dry, lol.

  • I had a delux size of that fresh rose petal mask and I loved it. I thought it did work well and help my combo oily skin, but I was pretty freaking devastated when I saw the price of the full size LOL

    • same L O L though i am planning on purchasing the full size when they have the $20 or $25 off $50 in december 😉 it’s only 40-45 then, soo…. it’s…. not…….. that bad???? (clearly i’m lying to myself because it’s still a steep price to pay lol)

  • that urban decay highlighter sounds like a dream! i never really try liquid highlighter so i’m intrigued! i hope local urban decay would bring it T^T the way you describe the fresh mask sounds so…………… tasty lol i kinda want it but i think i’ll pass. i hate gentle mask :///

    • LOL that’s the first time i’ve heard someone say they don’t like gentle masks, though i guess it’s fair if you want to feel like the mask is doing something right?

      • right? i want my mask to take off all the dirts and gunks on my face and my sin if that’s possible lol
